The Windmill
Cottages consists of four houses that were designed, built or
remodeled
by F. Spaulding Dunbar, who graduated from MIT as a naval architect. He
was famous for designing small boats and yachts. Although
he had no training as a builder of houses, Spaulding was able
to
transfer his extensive knowledge of boat building into houses of
authenticity, great charm and ambiance, with interiors that included
every inch of space cleverly and artistically used, steep stairways,
specially milled pine paneling, and unusual trussing and woodwork. Situated
on one half of the property and forming a wide U is the Dunbar
House,
with the Guest House attached by a breezeway on the east side and
the Windmill, balancing this property, on the west side. Across
from the Dunbar House, on the other half of the property where
the
boatyard is situated, is the Boatyard Cottage, which is directly
on a salt water cove, called the Mill Pond. These
properties are now owned respectively by Spaulding's daughter,
Fran, and
son, Bart. |
